How to read a cash-secured put candidate

Assume one standard 100-share contract, a $50 strike, a $1.00 premium per share, and 30 days to expiration. This example excludes fees, taxes, and interest on collateral.

Example Co. — calculations for learning, not a TradeGemini signal or recommendation
MetricExampleWhat it means
Strike / time remaining$50 / 30 daysThe agreed purchase price and remaining contract term.
Premium received$100$1.00 per share × 100 shares. This is cash received, not guaranteed profit.
Gross cash obligation$5,000$50 × 100 shares if assigned. Broker cash requirements can differ.
Period premium yield2.00%$100 ÷ $5,000, using gross strike collateral as the denominator.
Simple annualized yield24.33%2% × 365 ÷ 30. A comparison metric, not an expected annual return.
Expiration breakeven$49 per shareStrike minus premium per share, before costs.

If the stock is worth $40 at expiration and the put is assigned, the shares are worth $4,000 against a $5,000 purchase obligation. Including the $100 premium, the net loss is $900 before costs. If the stock becomes worthless, the loss is $4,900.

These calculations use the stated example convention. Check the live scanner’s field definitions and quote basis before comparing its metrics with this illustration.

Common questions

What is a CSP screener?

A cash-secured put screener narrows a set of stocks and put contracts using screening criteria. It helps organize research; it does not guarantee a profitable trade or protect against a fall in the underlying stock.

Is TradeGemini’s full screener free?

The full Wheeling Hub scanner requires Premium+ access. This public page is an educational preview. Check pricing for current subscription and trial terms.

Which controls does the scanner offer?

Choose your watchlist or the curated universe, a goal preset, and a days-to-expiration bucket. The scanner also includes an earnings-risk filter. Open the app to inspect the current controls and candidate details.

Does a high annualized yield mean a better trade?

No. A high quoted premium can accompany greater uncertainty or downside exposure. Review the underlying company, contract terms, and execution costs before interpreting a yield figure.
